Traffic volume count format, with a template

The layout a classified traffic volume count is recorded in — fifteen-minute rows, one column per vehicle class, both directions — as a CSV template for all 19 of our classes, with the IRC:64-1990 PCU factor for each.

What the format holds

Four things on every row

IRC:SP:19-2001 gives a typical proforma for the classified count, with fifteen-minute rows and a column per vehicle class. The template keeps that shape and adds what a reviewer asks for next.

Where and which way

Site, direction and date on every row. The template has 2 directions — Up and Down — each a full day of its own rows, so a directional split is a filter, not a recount.

Fifteen-minute intervals

96 rows per direction per day, from 00:00 to 24:00. An hourly total, and so the peak hour, is four rows added together.

One column per class

19 class columns — 18 named vehicle categories plus Other — each headed with its code and its PCU factor, so the sheet carries its own conversion.

Vehicles and PCU, side by side

A total in vehicles and a total in passenger car units on every row. A capacity assessment needs the second; a reviewer checking the count needs the first.

The same format, from a real survey

Counts below are a real survey, not illustrative figures. 7 of the 19 class columns are shown; the delivered file carries all of them.

Recording began at 07:39, so the first window is partial (six minutes). The count file labels windows by their actual span; the verification index below aligns the same three windows to the quarter-hour.

Converting to PCU

Count times factor, then add

Multiply each class’s count by its passenger car unit factor and add the products. In this run, 2,451 two-wheelers at 0.5 come to 1,225.5 PCU, and 61 buses at 3.0 come to 183. Across every class, 4,595 vehicles come to 3,649.5 PCU.

The factors are IRC:64-1990’s, and every class with its PCU value is set out on its own page. What the count has to feed in a DPR is covered in the classified traffic volume count.
